Samus succeeded, defeating Kraid, Ridley, and Mother Brain in the process, but as she escaped, a bomb was detonated by the Mother Brain. In Metroid, according to the story provided by the instruction manual, Samus was contacted by the Federation and sent as a last resort to stop the Pirates' production of Metroids.
