However, in Metroid: Zero Mission, as Samus attempted to outrun the explosion, she was shot down by a fleet of Pirates. In the original game, this is where the story ended. Samus succeeded, defeating Kraid, Ridley, and Mother Brain in the process, but as she escaped, a bomb was detonated by the Mother Brain. In Metroid, according to the story provided by the instruction manual, Samus was contacted by the Federation and sent as a last resort to stop the Pirates' production of Metroids.

Upon leaving the Chozo following her training and acquisition of the Power Suit, Samus served a brief stint as a member of the Galactic Federation, after which she decided to become a bounty hunter and fight the Space Pirates on her own, including Ridley. The Chozo subsequently infused her with a sample of their DNA in order to allow her to better survive environments too harsh for humans, after which they trained her in combat in order to prepare her to use the Power Suit.
